Wild At Art Workshops believes in giving children an early chance to engage in art, helping them understand the world around them. Art encapsulates diversity, history, geography, nature study, science, exploration, emotion, culture, mathematics, and literature. Art is life, and it is replete with stories.
Unlike subjects such as mathematics, art is often considered non-essential and is therefore undervalued. It is perceived as difficult to understand and inaccessible. However, it is time to rethink art's role in education.
We propose starting with contemporary art and modern movements, something that resonates with children today. Once there is familiarity with modern art, one can then delve back into earlier periods.
Why this approach? It is challenging for children to relate to historical periods they have never experienced. They may be intrigued by exciting tales from the past, but fully understanding art from those times requires maturity and substantial study.
This is why our focus is not on pre-20th-century art. Instead, we teach art from the past 80 years, as it has a significant ongoing impact and connections to modern contemporary life. We also make historical connections as needed, recognising the continuous flow of life and history. Therefore, starting with what is relatable and relevant ensures engagement and comprehension.
